I have never used wikis in this manner, but I have used wikipedia and wikiquote at quickly look up various things. I am interested in discovering the different ways in which wikis can be used and how things can be connected to the classroom. I can definitely see myself using wikis for interdisciplinary projects or regarding various homework activities.

This is my first experience with a wikis. I am a little overwhelmed at looking and taking in all the information. After reading some comments and review the wikis it seems to have some great potential. My concern with the wikis would be being able to monitor and keep on top of all the information and response that students would have in a class. On the other hand, it seems like an great way to have students involved with your class when they are not present. \nLast year our school improvement team created a wiki so that we could communicate over the summer. This tool was very beneficial because staff members could stay in touch the entire summer and it never felt as though the year ended. We were able to get some great ideas together and we kept the momentum moving through the summer.

\nI have also used wikis with one of my classes. Last year we set a wiki up so that I could post homework on the wiki and students could answer right on the wiki. \nI have spent sometime this morning researching and navagating around wiki websites. I find this tool useful to connect to college and graduate students. I am not sold on this idea for K-12 students.

\nHowever, I do realize that this is occuring in K-12 Education. This is where most of my problems occur. I feel it is great to be able to discuss and follow-up on certain topics, issues, questions, books, etc. It could be used in some unbelievable ways. However, I do wonder about the bullying aspect and\/or discipline problems that could occur. I also would not know at this point to include the parents or not. I read some articles that adult material does appear on these sites and that is something I would not see a coworker dealing with.

\nAt my school, I realize that some students do not have internet access at home. Therefore, I don't think I could use with my classroom.

The only downside I find, and this is the main reason I have not done one, is the constant monitoring. This is an easy ways for kids to target each other with cyber bullying and rumor spreading, so I worry that I do not have the time to stay on top of the wiki to prevent this and in return this issue would fall into my lap! I would love to be able to have one and use it as a type of book club where everyone could read a book and share information and ask questions, maybe one day this will be something I could do with a group of teachers!
